Jeff OWell, the rational explanation would be that "waittillnextyear" was the highest bidder in the original auction, contacted the seller "crazycanuck" and they worked out some kind of a deal for the item offline. A great deal for the seller, since his eBay auction didn't meet the reserve he didn't have to pay any kind of commission on the sale, so he kept all of the money whe he sold it to "waittillnextyear".
As for the starting bid, why not start it at $100? You save a couple of bucks on the listing fee, and I'm sure that the seller is confident that he can get a price that he would be satisfied with.
Maybe there is something strange going on... I don't know. But there are some really simple explanations that explain the situation.
