notice the background behind the "back" photo is greyish, unlike the background of the front scan.

Some scanners, by default, will change the scan to a b&w if it can't pick up enough colors (mine will do this). It looks like the scanner did not pick up the purplish color of the Polar Bear back and so converted the entire scan to b&w.
