Tharps used a lot of old photos. I believe that the Ruth photo is actually the same photo as the 1919 M101-6 Sporting News supplements, or a very similar picture, of a slim Ruth warming up as a pitcher wearing what appears to be a Boston uniform, at least by the socks (a very similar picture to his e121 set of 80 pitching pose). Ruth's Tharps card definitely does not depict the more portly 1928 version of his physique.
