That's a great line! To me, it's a combination of laziness and the fact that they learn there's no penalty to dumbing down your autograph to a bare scribble. I also think there must be a disdain among many celebrities for the fact that everywhere they go they're expected to to spend so much time looking down at pieces of paper instead of doing what normal people get to do in a restaurant, bar, store, ballpark, etc., which is to enjoy it. I always liked what Bill Russell said when he was a holdout to the whole autograph game: "I'll be happy to talk to you, but please don't ask me to stop what I'm doing and sign a piece of paper." That's an entirely reasonable approach, IMO.
