That's not exactly the kind of "defence" of Mickey Mantle that will win me over as a fan. I much prefer lauding players who made up for their more average talents with all out desire/effort/hustle, e.g. Ty Cobb, Pete Rose, etc.

Well, yeah, I guess. The problem I always have is not that player A's (e.g. Mantle's) cards are more expensive than some player B's. What's difficult for me to understand/accept is that player A's cards can fetch not just 3x the price of player B's cards - but 3000!
The magnitude of the disparity always makes me think of the Great Tulip Bulb Bubble.
