SABR provides tremendous member access to research resources at no extra charge. Among these are digitized copies of the Sporting News dating back to the 1880s, newspapers.com (basic), and a newspaper archive focused on the Black Press. There’s a ton more beyond this, including 100,000 “Weiss questionnaires” completed by players between 1945 and 2005.
Even with all that, I found it worthwhile to buy my own premium version of a newspapers.com account so I could get the Los Angeles Times archive. (A lot of my research is on the 1939 UCLA Bruins football team.)
But back to SABR, I’ll add that one of the best resources it offers is that I’m able to get in touch with tons of researchers who know way more than me and often have all kinds of stuff I’d never even think to look for.
