The collegiate pennant makers, namely Chicago Pennant Co. and Collegiate Mfg. Co. of Ames, IA, both offered screen printed (flocked) pennants
and sewed letters through the 1970s. This is because their merch was generally sold in book stores and were considered premium items.
So some people liked that vintage look from the turn of the century and were willing to pay for it, decades later.
