IMO his true contribution was as a songwriter. Me and Bobby McGee. The Pilgrim. Lovin' Her was Easier... Sunday Morning Coming Down. The list goes on and on. He was a Rhodes Scholar and it showed. While he was overshadowed by the other three who were cosmic performing talents, his appearances with Johnny, Willie and Waylon (the Outlaws) are classic.
To me his two greatest lines:
Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose.
He's a walking contradiction, partly truth and partly fiction.
