There's a great story in Kareem's book about a trip he made to the Philly playgrounds and encountering Monroe. Kareem didn't know who he was at the time. People watching the game are chanting "Black Jesus" after every great Monroe move. You read of course about Baylor's moves, but I think it can fairly be said Monroe was the first to really inject playground style into the NBA. And of course he could do it because along with all that flash, he was a solid fundamental player.
