Default FS: c1895 Polo Grounds NY Giants In-Game Action Photo

FS: c1895 sweeping in-game action photo at the Polo Grounds NY. From my research---based on uniforms, field configuration etc---my conclusion is that the photo was likely taken on Opening Day of 1895, with the Brooklyn Grooms at bat vs the New York Giants.

The photo has a strong possibility to be a Type 1, but was sent to PSA a few years ago and it came back N9 as Henry Yee could not conclude whether it is Type 1 or Type 2. In any case I would not date the actual print to be any later than about 1900, and my sale price reflects a Type 2 classification.

Lots of details in the photo, from the building and spectators on Coogan's Bluff to the packed grandstand and Opening Day bunting. The teams are seated on open benches (first covered benches at the Polo Grounds wasn't until 1897). The umpire is behind the pitcher (probably Amos Rusie), and the view from behind the outfield spectators is fantastic. An extremely early in-game action photo.

Condition is very good overall. Small tear and crease at/near bottom left edge. Pencil notations on reverse and a Brown Brothers stamp.

Size is about 5" x 7.5"

Price: $525 shipped, paypal g/s
