I imagine the most likely scenario is that player in the background was moving and mostly blurred out. Since they wanted to use that particular photo of
'The Babe,' they had an artist try to work some magic and solidify the image a bit while 'eliminating' some of his more blurred areas.
(He was probably fired the next day.
