Theory: Purely a business decision. If they show the backs only, then the whole 'buy the card, not the slab' maxim is thrown out the window. If you can't actually see what the card (front) looks like, then the only thing that matters is the number on the slab and nothing else. Meaning, for example, no bad eye appeal cards (because there's a helluva lot more of them than 'good' eye appeal versions) will sell for less than what any 'normal' looking cards go for, according to their stats. The data sort of gets homogenized...and, of course, the prices will keep creeping upward.
