I always assumed that they were cut from an advertising sheet...it just makes sense that they would have a promotional display in the Spalding stores to get folks on board with their scrip (coupon) scheme. I imagine only a select number of subjects were shown on it, and that is perhaps why the known blank back list is fairly small.
All conjecture of course.
