Bartell suffered from Alzehimer's for many years. That letter was actually typed by his wife, who I also knew, but signed by Bartell himself. Charging for autographs was her idea because it took a lot out of Dick to do it in his condition. Also, she seemed extremely fixated on money any time she wrote me or whenever we spoke on the phone--not just money for autographs, but money in general.
