Default H. D. Smith ("Scrapps") set sales analysis

hi all,

I thought this might interest some of you. I was trying to figure out how to price my lower-grade Scrapps set for the National and I decided to try some analysis. The spreadsheet doc with the full info can't be posted here but if you want a copy just email me at apspr@att.net and I'll send it to you.

My Scrapps cards are ungraded presently but I figure they'll all be 2/30 or lower when they grade. So I tabulated all sales of AU, PSA1/SGC10, 1.5/20, and 2/30 Scrapps recorded by VCP since January 2020 (since there was a big jump in prices between 2019 and 2020, as with so many cards).

Then I derived an average cumulative price for the 13 non-HOFers and an individual average for each of the 5 HOFers.

RESULTS:
Commons avg. $244 each (73 sales)
Brouthers avg. $794 (9 sales)
Comiskey avg. $665 (6 sales)
Hanlon avg. $761 (7 sales)
Thompson avg. $1572 (6 sales)
White avg. $2033 (7 sales)
HOF Average: $1146
Estimated this way, the set would be worth about $8900 (244x13 + 1146x5)

Then, to test for anomalies, I did the compilation in two other ways:

1. Same as above but with the lowest and highest figures for each player dropped.
RESULTS:
Commons avg. $237 each
Brouthers avg. $779
Comiskey avg. $650
Hanlon avg. $631
Thompson avg. $1406
White avg. $2075
HOF Average: $1089
Estimated this way, the set would be worth about $8520 (237x13 + 1089x5)

2. Now using only the AU, 1, and 1.5 sales since 2020
RESULTS:
Commons avg. $223 each
Brouthers avg. $715
Comiskey avg. $371 (only one sale)
Hanlon avg. $531
Thompson avg. $1062
White avg. $1641
HOF Average: $900
Estimated this way, the set would be worth about $7400 (223x13 + 900x5)
In this estimate, I would add another $300 for the Comiskey since that one sale is an unusually low price (it was a nasty beater) = $7700. And there's one sale of White which is anomalously low ($492). Without it the White average jumps to $2024 which I think is probably more like it - With those two adjustments my estimate of the set's value jumps to around 8K.

I'm not presenting these figures as "the truth" or anything - just thought it was an interesting result, and helps me feel my set price is now more accurate.
