The Saturday Evening Post labeled him the "The Ballplayer Nobody Wanted" but became a very popular player with teammates and fans and was a key player in the Wiz Kids NL pennant in 1950 and voted the top Phils catcher of all time in 1969 by Phils fans. He and Dick Sisler would sometimes fake heated arguments in a hotel lobby or sit at the opposite ends of a lobby couch and continually cross their legs in different directions at the same time
