It's not just a AH issue. I trust all the AHs I deal with. But consignors can easily get friends to tap tap tap something. Give it a nudge. A risky strategy of course, but I'd be surprised if it doesn't happen a decent amount.

You do run the risk of bidding against yourself if the auction house is not on the up-and-up. Otherwise you are bidding against other bidders while you are enjoying a good night's sleep. Again, this only works if you trust the auction house. That is up to each person to decide.
