I applaud your Museum in being proactive in this matter.
I was actually going to make a tongue-in-cheek comment to having these tested for a DNA match (already knowing the answer) but opted against being bothered. It's wonderful to hear that you actually went so far as to suggest it yourselves!
Of course, those on the other side of the argument would ask how any DNA could have survived the supposed alcohol soaking while in the hospital! Its antiseptic properties would have killed it all off!
