Hank, I, too, would have thought this Soto RC would have sold for more, especially if were placed in a catalog auction, rather than an online auction. But, I'm totally not into modern cards, so my thought re this probably isn't worth a grain of salt.

Bryan, the way I read this piece, the auction house got the card graded for the consignor and presumably charged him the costs thereof (TPG fee + shipping), which I assume accounts for the difference you mention in your first paragraph.

And, I completely agree with what you said in your second paragraph. In fact, I sent the Wash. Post's sports reporter who wrote this piece an email in which I explained in greater detail what you said in your paragraph. I'll send you my email to the Post, but I'll not post it here as I don't want some of my comments re a certain auction house to become public.
