As a collector, I had no problem using a signed ball as a filler. Not ideal, but do you actually want to own certain autographs or not? Sometimes it's a matter of cost, sometimes rarity; usually both! Crossing that longstanding name off my want list mattered the most.
Actually, signed baseballs are my least favorite medium-very bulky and don't display well. I would only purchase a signed baseball for Youngs or Chesbro from the 1901 reunion. That said, signed baseball are making a major comeback amongst younger collectors.
