Building, or leasing, a couple dozen 400 million + ballparks would be quite expensive. Not to mention all of the air travel, accommodations, salaries (50 million per team for 20 teams is a cool billion dollars,) and on and on.

The financiers, having to front well north of a billion dollars, would want to be sure their investment would produce a worthwhile return. Meanwhile, the players would want to maximize their salaries, and so, they would unionize.

And we'd have the same situation that currently exists. The players need the owners and their financial backing, while the owners need the players to be able to generate profitable revenue from their investment.

Current negotiations are nothing more than simply establishing the market price of major league caliber labor. There's a bid price and an ask price. Eventually they will come to agreement, same as happens a million times a day on the floor of the NYSE.
