I started collecting in the same timeframe as you, late 80s through mid 90s, and I’m also a Cubs fan. Some of the directions I am toying with are:
1. Basic Jordan cards from when he was an active player. Prices are still inflated from the Last Dance, but it’s unclear to me if they will to pre-documentary levels. I also don’t really collect basketball, but I make an exception for Jordan. Lots of inventory and lots of wacky designs to choose from.
2. Ernie Banks basic Topps run.
3. Buy a card of the best Cubs player from each regular Topps issue.
4. Collect RCs of great cubs through the years.
5. Collect a Cubs team set from an all-time iconic set (33 Goudey, 51 Bowman, etc)
6. I think there was a Cubs set from Topps Archives in 2013 only available at Cubs games. It’s a cool set and there’s a higher end season ticket holder version.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do!!
