The only thing I could find on them was this:

These Pins are very difficult to find in High Grade condition due to rusting and scratching.

Issued over a period of years in a variety of styles, these celluloid pinback buttons have in common their approximately 1" diameter and the appearance of the player name at bottom. Black-and-white player portrait photos are found on a variety of backgrounds. In this checklist, the color of the background is listed, where known, immediately after the team name (where known). Other distinguishing characteristics may also be noted. The pins were usually originally sold with a red, white and blue swallow-tailed silk pennant attached and a brass chain with a baseball, bat or glove charms, or similar plastic toys.

ADD: Dunno where he got this info, but it doesn't sound right to me.
