I weigh cards for research but I'm a printer by trade. Probably the biggest reason why you should do this is that printing technology is so darn good these days and there are a lot of fakes and altered cards that can fool even the best. One of the things they often get wrong is the stock -but a digital microscope and a black light are very handy tools for vintage and I highly recommend both.
Some dealers are so good that they can tell what the proper weight should be depending on the card just by holding it in their hand, but I'm not. The more cards you see the more experience you'll have.
