Day 50 (February 19, 2020 – 050)

To me it’s truly sad that at the time the two most beloved professional athletes in Baltimore, Brooks Robinson and Johnny Unitas, didn’t have a statue in or outside of Memorial Stadium. There’s now a Johnny “Golden Arm” Unitas, or just “Johnny U”, statue outside of the Baltimore Ravens stadium that was unveiled after his passing in 2002. Thankfully there are now two Brooks Robinson statues in Baltimore, one just outside of Camden Yards and one inside and I am very thankful that Brooks was able to see both unveiled firsthand.

In 1977 the Mayor, William Donald Schaefer, tried to get a statue of Brooks Robinson and Johnny Unitas at Memorial Stadium. This is a card stock item with Brooks and Johnny pictured on the front and the mailing address on the back to send in donations for the statue project. Of course, this never occurred.
