I can assure you...the fronts are not easy to do well. Original art takes time, skill, patience and a sense of humor. Although I do not specialize in existing card designs, the ones I make have different custom reverses to help identify and differentiate from their origins.
Bob Lemke's cards are, indeed, "so cool". No doubt about that. And, yes...some backs take FOREVER. For me, it's easier to create something that already existed for sure. Cartooning, stock and font match are keys to producing cards that never were. The Kaline is exceptional. The Gehrig and Ruth have varying degrees of clarity and super-imposition and don't have the Deco-Gothic font used on the original issue. Finally, the 1939 sleeve patch is a 1935-36 no-no. Fronts are not easy.
It's hard to strike a balance between the production limitations of 1935 and an attractive card--while maintaining the "feel" of an authentic vintage item.
I'll see if I have any sample backs to share.
