HOLY GRAIL for Vintage Baseball Program & Scorecard Collectors.
Only one known to surface!!!!! (at least I can't find another searching all auction houses, if someone knows of another please advise and I'll amend).
This was the program for the series the Cleveland Indians met Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees in August of 1920....
....and Carl Mays beaned & killed Ray Chapman.
The scorecard portion is not completely filled in but the lineups match the August 16, 17 & 18 series between Cleveland and NY....
....and what names are filled in and crossed out pinpoints the very next game after Chapman was beaned. Chapman's name has a line through it as it was replaced, as he died the day before this game was played. The programs and scorecards were already made up for the 3 game series with Chapman's name in it, and Mays as well for the Yankees.
The score was also noted on the scorecard 4-3, again re-affirming this is for the very game after Chapman was beaned.
The program/scorecard would have been the same for the entire series so this is the very program from when Mays hit him.
Just an
AMAZING piece of baseball history and one I'm guessing no vintage Program/Scorecard or Yankee collector has in their collection.
Program is in very good condition, no major flaws.
Will be 100 years old next summer!
