This is the most confusing set I’ve ever collected by far! New variations show up every so often, there’s never been a consistent checklist, players are listed that can’t be confirmed…and on and on. From what I can tell, there are 40 cards in the regular set (excluding Spencer which I cannot confirm). There also appear to be 20 variations…maybe more….that mostly consist of players transitioning into coaches or retiring after the initial print run. Including the variations, the master set would run 60 players or more.
This grouping here represents the largest collection of w590s that I’m aware of. There are no sets registered with SGC and only two partial sets registered with PSA. This grouping totals 51 cards which includes Cobb, Ruth, Gehrig and a complete base set (pending confirmation of Spencer). It also includes several of the really tough variations.
Regarding Spencer….I began trying to confirm the existence of this card over a decade ago. At one point, I even heard from Bob Lemke on the matter who told me that he believed his research did initially identify the Spencer as part of the set, however he could not recall visually seeing the card.
Condition-wise – this is actually a really nice grouping of cards. Many of these look NRMT, however I graded them as EXMT+. There are very few cards even in poor-fair condition and no ugly ones. There are several cards that had been trimmed down to the photo which is normal for this set. I tried to notate those cards as best I could.
This is an extremely significant grouping of cards from one of the most underrated prewar sets out there. Not sure on a selling price but I’m open to offers. Before actually listing a price, I’d like to give trading a shot and I’m open to any offers, especially ones containing t204 or e107 HOFers, Ruth cards from the 20s or Cobb/Wagner cards.
I will be keeping this set intact for the time being. However, I’m happy to hang on to the Gehrig/Cobb/Ruth cards should the buyer not want them if that helps facilitate a trade or sale.
Thanks in advance,
Brian
