I get the sense that the reason for this is that the vast majority of folks selling on COMC only know about modern cards, and when they somehow get a beat-up Goudey, they get excited and slap a $150 price tag on it without doing any research.

Well, some but not all. Because COMC is a warehouse (that also crossposts to Amazon and eBay), plenty of stuff sells at high prices. But the stuff that's low priced gets bought super quick or is bought and repriced by a different consignor on site. Out of the 25,000 cards I have for sale, I bought 22K of them on COMC itself. I have mailed them about 6,000 cards and 2,650 of those have sold for a combined $10,000. The other 3,250 I still have for sale.
