With a rare card, past sales are irrelevant. Sorry to all of you who think they matter.

If the card is really rare, the seller holds the power (unless he is forced to sell). The buyer can't find another card. They can't even get a substitute (like dropping from looking for a psa 10 to a psa 9). If you've got the only game in town, what difference does the last sale make? They have to pay what you want, or they can't get the card.

Which is why all these schmucks paying huge bucks for topps cards is insane in my book. Every single day, you can get any topps card (including the "rare" high numbers) you want if you have the money. There may be a couple exceptions. The 1952 grey backs are pretty rare - those aren't sold every day. But there are other cards i've been looking for a couple decades. When you see those, what are they worth?
