The line was unbelievable and many were turned away. I was one of the lucky ones who finally got to receive my autograph. The Mick was at the table with a stack of sharpies and a can of beer. Hank Bauer sat next to him (also drinking), and the two of them talked. Mantle signed your item but never acknowledged your were there. Even when you thanked him, he just talked to Bauer or got another beer out of the cooler behind him. I was glad my son was too young to accompany me. Joe DiMaggio was sometime after Mantle and oh what a difference. He wore a suit and tie, thanked every single person and would shake your hand if you offered. These were two experiences I have never forgotten.
Your Mantle story sounds like my Willie Mays story. And your DiMaggio story sounds like my Don Drysdale story.

To this day I wonder why the Giants bother bringing Mays anywhere....so often the story is the same.
