SMR prices off of PSA are what quite a few people go by and there is a tool (I forgot what it was called) that can do a search of eBay auctions so you can get an idea of what the market price is for a particular player.
There are definitely some rare commons that bring a premium. Titus (has slowed downa lot though), Both Dahlens, Kleinow (Boston), Lundgren (Chicago), Frank Smith (Chicago and Boston), Bull Durham, Pelty, Ambros Puttman, George Browne (Washington) and Elberfeld (Washington). There are more but those are some of the more common ones.

Josh, you are right. But the SMR magazine is terrible. One must consider the backs too. Not all Sweet Caporal backs are the common $18 variety. And the Piedmont Fac 42 is very rare.
