Default SOLD!!!! 1949 Program Satchel Paige vs. Joe DiMaggio!!

July 25 1949 Yankee Stadium

This would be the 2nd time Paige faced DiMaggio in 1949, the 1st time and only time at Yankee Stadium in front of 71,354 fans on a Monday evening, yes 71,354, wow!!! (Paige faced DiMaggio in only 1 AB in 1948, the 1st time they ever faced off against each other in major league uniforms)

The 2nd place World Champs came to town and were 2 games back and took on the 1st place Yankees. The Indians led 4-1 going into the bottom of the 8th.

Satchel would come in the bottom of the 8th in relief with nobody out and 2 on and face DiMaggio. The crowd must have loved seeing Paige walk to the mound to face the Yankee great!

He got DiMaggio to fly out, as he did the next 2 batters to get out of the jam, then retired all 3 batter he faced in the bottom of the 9th. 6 batters faced 6 batters went back to the bench. Game over. Paige gets the save. That would be the only time Yankees fans would see the great Satchel Paige in 1949.

Legendary Boston Red Sox slugger Ted Williams claimed, “Paige was the greatest pitcher in baseball.” Famed New York Yankee Joe DiMaggio said Satchel Paige was the “best and fastest pitcher I’ve ever faced.” Celebrated St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Dizzy Dean remarked, “He’s a better pitcher than I ever hope to be.” Homestead Grays first baseman and Hall of Famer Buck Leonard declared, “He threw fire.”

$35 shipped for this program in very good/excellent condition. writing on front cover notes the date, score, etc.
