Topps never had a real monopoly on baseball cards per se, but the contracts they asked players to sign ( Bowman as well) gave them the exclusive right to market the players likeness with gum or confections.

I still have unopened Leaf and Fleer 63 packs. At least the cookies were so bland that no one complains much about cookie stains
