Some math can solve your question.
If you stay under your 40 free listings per month, the math is really simple.
It costs $20 for a store. You save 10% on final value fees (of the 10% final value fee... or 1% of final hammer price)
So to make up the cost of the store you'd need to sell $2000 in merchandise.
If you do indeed list more than the 40 free listing, then your total sales to break even would drastically reduce from $2000.
If you list 60 listings a month, you'd have to pay for 20 at $0.30 each and that's $6. Now you only have to "make up" another $14 to break even, which is just $1400 is merchandise sales.
For me, it's worth it. I sell more than $2000 a month on eBay and I list around 60-100 items each month. Like you, I was hesitant as well. I still pay month to month, just so I dont have to be locked in for a full year. The extra $4 for the "per month" is worth it to me in case I ever want to abandon ship.
Hope this helps.
