Not made from two different sweaters, but two separately manufactured parts of a same sweater, then meant to be joined together. My guess is that this style garment was better than a total whole pullover (which would ruin their hairdo). The buttons on the bottom half, as well as the top half, could be unbuttoned for easy pullover access (and McGraw's tummy), and then re-buttoned.

When you see cards from that era reproduced in scanner technology from our own era, the darkened contrast at the "stitch" is obvious. These guys, traintravelers all, folded up their garments, in this case at the halfway stitch, to fit inside a suitcase - no UnderArmour was then being sent to the drycleaners.
