They were meant to be pasted it, that is why the backs are printed upside down- you glued the cards in at the time and could bend back the card from the bottom to correctly read the info on the back.
Here's a few images of a couple of them that I owned- between '05 and '11 I bought all 3 that came up, constantly upgrading. The best one now resides in Andy's collection, and while I couldn't call it mint it's probably one of the nicest ones out there.
Sorry for the slight hijack, but since we're talking about albums....
In contrast to the CJ album, the '49 Leaf album was die cut to tuck the cards into:
The '34 Goudey albums were designed to have cards pasted into them, but had a lot more info inside:
FWIW, I found the albums for each of these sets considerably harder to find in any condition than the cards.
