The fraying you find along the top and less so along the side is not a giveaway or tell-tale sign, IMO. It is commonly found on m101-4 type cards, although usually along the side edges rather than the ends. Here are a few:
I will back up and say that such fraying is not only less common on the top and bottom, it is not found on any of my GLobe-backed cards, so maybe you're on to something.
