Default OT: A Question about fielding Errors

I know this has nothing to do about cards, but I can't think of a better place to ask. I was looking at some stats for prewar players and noticed how out of whack the fielding statistics appeared to be.

from my understanding, Hall of Famers like Honus Wagner and Joe Tinker were considered superior fielders- maybe some of the best to ever play their position. On the other hand, their statistics are horrible.

I wonder, was there a significant change in how an error was recorded? Are the 60 errors recorded by Wagner in 1905 not truly representative of his fielding skills because scorekeepers were far more liberal about giving out errors?

Any guidance would be great. Thanks in advance.
