The Library of Congress has a lot of high quality early baseball photos for free use online, but I don't know what they have from later.
One thing is the copyright issues. Early photos say 1910 usually have no copyright restrictions, while a lot of 1950s might.
As the LOC is a government entity, most of its stuff offered is free of use. That's why NASA photos are free-- we citizens pay for NASA so their photos are public domain.
But I'd see what the Library of Congress has.
I thought Life magazine put a ton of their photos online too. I don't know if it's free or what are the restrictions, but they'd have 1950s baseball photos.
