He was relieved of paying an expense because of the goodness of others and in turn used "his" money that would have otherwise gone to pay that expense, to buy baseball cards. Your post made it sound like he did not reap some financial benefit because he did not get any of the money. Paying the obligation is the same thing as giving him the money directly.
