A 1955 calendar would likely smell like it's from 1955. Musty. I would think that's as good a test as any.
Another test is to to look at the other stuff he is selling. If it looks legitimate, vintage and accurately described, that suggests he generally knows what he's doing.
For what it's worth, I had a vintage 1955 player baseball calendar in that style that was shrink wrapped. I assume that was the way it was originally manufactured, as the paper months at the bottom could easily come off or tear during distribution or even storage. I don't think there's anything errant with the shrink wrap.
