Description:
Collection of fifteen bread labels from the 1952 "Tip Top Bread" set, including the important Mickey Mantle. Designed to be applied to loaves of their namesake bread, labels from this series are naturally rare (having been issued only one label per loaf of bread) and often found with numerous condition issues. Each label measures 2-1/2" x 2-3/4" (designed with die-cut corners) with the player image, name, and team inside of a star against a bright red background. The backs are blank and are almost always found with remnants of the bread packaging still affixed. While the labels in this collection are technically low grade for this reason, the labels present well throughout, with the typical wrinkling and minor tears visible but not overwhelming. The Mickey Mantle label (which is a significant early Mantle rarity) has been repaired with tape across the front. The collection consists of the following: Ralph Branca, Roy Campanella, Phil Cavarretta, Ned Garver, Sid Gordon, Eddie Joost, Whitey Lockman, Sal Maglie, Mickey Mantle, Dale Mitchell, Bob Porterfield, Ray Scarborough, Dick Sisler, Vern Stephens, and Eddie Yost. Complete sets of the bread labels do not often come up for sale, so this collection presents a nice opportunity to acquire nearly one-third of a complete set, including the key label in Mickey Mantle. Also included: 1951 Fischer's "Bread For Energy" Labels (3 labels): Gil Hodges, Ted Kluszewski, and Jim Konstanty. These labels, similar in nature to the Tip Top labels, feature a player image and a box with name, team, and key figures against a solid background. The Fischer company's motto, "Bread For Energy," is along the bottom border of the labels, which measure 2-3/4" square. While technically low-grade due to packaging remnants on the reverse, these labels are also still very presentable with only minor wrinkling and tears present. Total: 18 bread labels. Reserve $500. Estimate (open).
