It really depends on the item. I don't think it will be easy to make money on the spalding ruth, or the 415k+bp ruth bat or a 200k gehrig bat. There are a few new bat guys that have entered the market lately and they are helping raise prices. If you look back several years ago.. a fair example of ruth, gehrig or cobb would sell for more than it would now. Its a very limited market for people who can drop 50k+ on an item.... and a very very limited market for people who can spend 200k on a bat or jersey.
I would bet if you re auctioned either Ruth bat in the next 2 years you would lose money but I dont think these items aren't being bought by people who really need to worry about them going up in value..
