The above is the Second Ammendment. It was written at a time when the US had no standing army; state militias were the country's sole ground army. The Supreme Court disagreed with the bolded statement above, and did so fairly recently. There is plenty of room to maneuver if you want to restrict the types of guns purchased and who can purchase them.
