I am OK with almost all flaws and actually go out of my way to find cards that are way off center and have print flaws.

About the only thing that makes me pass on a card is damage to the players...

It has nothing to do with counterfeiting. If you look at a card from the side it is 2 pieces glued together. It is fairly easy to remove the top thin layer the front is printed on from the cardboard...
