Pictures of the George Close Company Building (Let's see some E94s)
Posted By: J Hull
Not long ago I moved from Boston across the river to Cambridge, Mass. and was quite surprised to find that right down the street from where I now live is the George Close Building. And sure enough, it turns out to be the former location of the George Close Company, now apparently an apartment building.

Since we're finally having a small taste of spring here in New England I thought I'd take a few pictures and post them. Maybe we can have a vintage card thread where boardmembers post some E94s?

The lobby's completely been redone, but this sign is in the wall in the entryway:

This 13-story building is the same as in 1895, the name above it's
entrance is the same....but, everything else has changed.

Anyhow, here's my token type card.

TED Z

Posted By: leon
I think there is a surfrace scrape on his elbow but am not positive. That card is in the safe deposit box so I can't go check easily. I think it's a nice looking 20 and paid a premium for the condition (relative to the technical grade).

Posted By: Peter Thomas
For 3 years while at MIT 1961 thru 1963 I lived at 269 Broadway. I must have walked by that building more than 1000 times. I was not until 4 years ago at a 40th reunion and was showing my wife the neighborhood that I lived in, that I put the name with the building. When I was there it was a manufacturing use of some sort. BTW our apartment was a 4 bedroom and shared with 3 other roommates. It had coal heat - shoveled by me. The rent was $75 per month split 4 ways. Thanks for the photos.

Posted By: Bob
Leon- I think the premium you paid was for the nicer than graded condition but was also for the background color (orange). I've got the other orange E94 that Lionel once owned and the fact that these two orange backgrounds came from the Carter collection and all other oranges known came from Brian Daniel's horde lends some credence to the theory that all oranges didn't come from the same sheet. No oranges exist for any players (to my knowledge) in numbers greater than 1. Still waiting to see the orange Young, I believe the rest are in collections and accounted for.
I remember going round and round with Brian years ago when he told me he had some orange E94s and I told him he was wrong, that the oranges were E98s (many of the same poses), and there were no oranges in existence. He was right. Maybe some day we'll find out the mystery of these oranges...
tbob
