Question about eBay-posted 1928 Babe Ruth candy card
Posted By: Spike
This card professes to be the real deal, and naturally would be a steal at the opening price:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:I T&item=140301785120

Anyone out there willing to put real US dollars down on an ungraded 1928 Ruth candy card? It's a huge hole in my type collection, but seems rare enough to me that it'd be worth grading each and every one if you think it's real. What do folks think?

Spike

Question about eBay-posted 1928 Babe Ruth candy card
Posted By: JohnnyH
Doesn't really come across as a scam, plus he is offering a refund. His last two sales went through and the wrapper looked real. I emailed him asking if he was sure they were real and he got right back to me, here is what he said-

I bought 6 (#1-6) of these cards from a dealer in Louisville who had several of these cards, as well as the wrappers from the candy. I picked out the best looking card of each number. He specialized in older Yankee collectibles, especially Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig items. I looked them over closely and see no reason to doubt the cards aren't originals.

Upon what basis do you (or someone else) think it's fake? I have told 2 others who bid on earlier cards, that if they get their card graded and discover that it is NOT original, I'll gladly refund their money.

Question about eBay-posted 1928 Babe Ruth candy card
Posted By: leon
If you want to buy a fake card go for it. I am 100% sure it's a bad reprint. I have studied them extensively. How do I know? I have handled enough and seen enough to know. IT's the grainy look, trust me. Whoever grades it as anything other than a fake is making a mistake. regards

Question about eBay-posted 1928 Babe Ruth candy card
Posted By: leon
I don't know about top experts, maybe Dan is, but I do know about that card...Also, if anyone would hold it in their hand, and hold a real one too, it would be painfully obvious that the paper on the fake doesn't feel "smooth" like 80 yr old paper is. You just can't fake that "feel"....Now, there are some good fakes out there, to be sure, but this isn't one of them. regards
