advice needed on 1932 US Caramel Joe Cronin please
Posted By: Marilyn
I have listed a 1932 US Caramel Joe Cronin card on Ebay. It was given to a nun as a donation to her school. I was told I may be very pleasantly surprised at the outcome of this auction. And I was refered to you.
Today I was offered $1000 for it and I turned it down. Am I nuts?
The card looks nearly perfect to me, and it comes with the US Caramel wrapper which is also in very good shape.

Edited title to be more descriptive and to put original name back as the originator

In other words, why would you turn that much money down BEFORE you had figured out the fair market price?

I don't get it.

Note: Brian is not the author of this thread, I think his name is appearing there just because of the edit.

Posted By: Marilyn
Because this morning I received an email telling me that I should not accept any offers no matter how high. He said I would be very surprised. he also suggested your site. I figured if a guy would offer that much he must think it was worth more. Just trying to get the most I can for my nun friend.

Posted By: Frank Wakefield
Generally, for the cards we had as kids...

We'd be money ahead if we'd thrown all of the cards away, and instead kept all of the wrappers, neatly pressed in a book. But it isn't about the money. At least it isn't supposed to be...

Posted By: Jim VB
Dan,

I'm not 100% sure but I think that's a wrapper from the R114 non-sports set, US Caramel American Heroes. It depicts the first 32 Presidents.

Posted By: Richard L.
Jim,
You are correct,it is the R114 wrapper, valued around $300. And that is a super clean and sharp looking Cronin. I think the seller should relist each item separately(and list the wrapper in the correct category).

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Yeah...that's the set with the tough McKinley card right? I didn't think the ballplayers came in that set also.

Posted By: Jim VB
The equation is that McKinley = Lindstrom

(although I think a few more McKinley's have been found than Lindstroms.)

Posted By: Paul
I'm the one who referred Marilyn to the board. I had assumed the wrapper was from the baseball set and therefore quite valuable. For those who have not looked at the link, the condition of the Cronin card is truly astonishing, with paper threads still dangling from the bottom from the original cutting process. I think it should be worth quite a lot, especially if graded, though a little less than I was assuming because the wrapper is not from the bb set.

Posted By: Jim VB
As several people on the board suggested, she has re-listed this card, without the wrapper. She intends to re-list the wrapper later today.

Posted By: Jim VB
She'll probably get close to $300 for the wrapper, so she would only need to get $700 for the card to make out OK.

Posted By: Richard L.
Dan, "a fairly common wrapper" oh I see downplay it so you can snipe heavy at the end, clever . Now you can proudly display it alongside your McKinley congrats. The seller made the right call not to end early at a grand for the pair.

edited to add: Almost 900 for the Cronin and 665 for the wrapper.
