Why so much for this skinned/trimmed OJ?

Posted By: Dan Bretta
http://tinyurl.com/884xsw

Dan has been listing these skinned/trimmed OJ's for a while now and this one went for about 4-5 times what they've normally been selling for. According to Jay Miller the Walsh (Omahas) is not a tough card so I'm wondering what happened here?

Posted By: Fred C
Absolutely weird. It looks like the winning bidder placed a bid and one other person just kept jacking it up. Why? Good question. That card is just horrible. Not only is the ad cut but the name, position and team information are cut off also.

Edited to add: Time Ended:Jan-04-09 17:05:26 PST

Edited a second time: to get rid of all the open spaces between the bid lines.

Bidder Bid Amount Bid Time

s***t( 119) US $272.78 Jan-04-09 13:38:31 PST

y***r( 605) US $267.78 Jan-04-09 16:58:10 PST

y***r( 605) US $207.76 Jan-04-09 13:51:19 PST

y***r( 605) US $157.76 Jan-04-09 13:49:06 PST

y***r( 605) US $127.66 Jan-04-09 13:48:50 PST

y***r( 605) US $88.87 Jan-04-09 13:48:18 PST

o***o( 1945) US $51.00 Dec-30-08 05:35:04 PST

3***w( 904) US $50.00 Dec-28-08 17:44:17 PST

Starting Price US $0.99 Dec-28-08 17:05:26 PST

All you need is 2 people who have been looking for a certain player, and when it isnt one of the most common players, they could've been looking for 6 months+, so when that one shows up they go hardcore for it

Posted By: joe
I know there are some who will buy these cards, I just can't do it. I collect Detroit Old Judge and have passed up many with ads cut off the bottom. There is a Cabinet right now in the 19th Century auction with the bottom cut off, I just can't pull the trigger on that one either. But, if some collectors are happy with these cards, well that's ok too.

Joe

Ty Cobb, Spikes flying!

Posted By: Dan Bretta
I am perfectly happy to pull the trigger on the skinned/trimmed OJ's, but I will never go that high when the "common's" that I've been after so far have gone for less than that for an intact card.

Posted By: Jay
Amazing how many players become "unknown" when the name is cut off. There is nothing special about Reddy Walsh and the pose is a common one. Looks to me like the card went for about $200 too much.

Posted By: john/z28jd
If someone bid that much because of the unknown in the title its their own fault. I told Dan who the player/team was about 2 hours after it was listed(7 day auction) and he had the first revision up minutes later, and a 2nd,more bold revision up shortly after that

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Jay, this was Dan McKee's auction and someone notified him straight away that it was Walsh of Omaha and he made the changes in the body of the auction..he couldn't change the title because someone had bid on it already.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
John, you beat me to it by a minute...I see now that you were the one who notified Dan. I thought perhaps it was an Omaha player because of the uniform, but I didn't know for sure so I didn't say anything.

Posted By: john/z28jd
I knew it was Walsh right away because of the uniform combo he has on,not because of the pose. There aren't too many others with that Omaha striped shirt, and I knew it wasn't Nichols or Canavan. If you look at enough of these things, you can narrow down the "no names" pretty easy if you dont know them offhand. Basically the formula is:

low income + high interest + lots of free time = knowing it was Walsh

Posted By: john/z28jd

To Joe about accepting lower grade cards:

I used to only take complete cards until I really expanded my collecting goal for the set. When I realized some cards are too tough to pass up and the cards in general were just too expensive to spend book value and expect to reach my goal. Some of the best picture quality cards I have are ones that have the ad trimmed off.

Posted By: Fred C
Maybe the person that won it is a Joe Walsh (James Gang and Eagles) fan and this was something kind of cool to them. Makes me want to break out the Joe Walsh's greatest hit CD.
